Etymology Of Qissa Khawani Bazar  

The Peshawar city as its geographical positioning was once the maj0or stopover for the raiders, conquerors, and travelers that came to the sub-continent. The Bazar name originated from that time when visitors and caravans used to pass by the bazaar it was always a stay-point for them. People coming from the long and tiring journey from the neighboring countries and Afghanistan used to stop in this market to regain their energy, have some rest and buckle up to head towards central Asia passing through the mountainous region of Khyber.
The Qissa Khawani Bazar used to hold several green tea shops and stops where the travelers used to Sit and share their travel stories, experiences and gossips while enjoying their Qehwa, so the market was named the Bazar of storytellers.

Qissa Khawani Bazar still holds some of the old Qehwa Shops (green tea shops) from the forgotten era that are the only reminiscence of the old times. On the backside of the Bazar, there is still an old tea shop that has been serving traditional Peshawar green tea to its customer for over 9 decades. The shop still uses the traditional method of making green tea in large banging kettles, the old walls of the shop now narrate the story of every visitor it has seen. The customers of the tea shop say that feeling peace and sitting here and enjoying the Qehwa refreshes them, it takes out all the stress of the day, the regular customers say that coming to the Qehwa khana has become their ritual.

The Qissa Khawani Bazar along with its Qehwa Shops popularity is nowadays also famous among the tourist because of the neighborhood where many popular artists from Bollywood and their families have once lived there.
Indian Artists like Muhammad Yusuf Khan (known as Dilip Kumar) was born in 1922 near the Qissa Khawani Bazaar and has spent the early years of his life in this area. The actor's house is still present in the Dooma Gali where he was born. He and his family moved to Bombay in 1930. The actor in old age still had the memories of this place fresh in his mind. Some other known actors Including Raj Kapoor and Shahrukh khan’s Family had lived in this area.
