6 Convenient Ways To Make A Home Safe For Elderly People
If you are the one who has elderly parents, and they want to live with you, and you need to prepare your house for them. Having elders in your life is a great blessing and they have come up with many ups and downs. They have experienced many things which may be proved useful for you. Besides the presence of elderly people at home makes the home complete and you always enjoy the moments of childhood around them.
When any person entered his elder age, he must face some problems like difficulty in motility, weak memory, less energy than the young to perform their daily routine tasks. So, if your elderly parents are living with you need to renovate your house accordingly. Here I am presenting some convenient methods to make your house comfortable and overwhelming for elderly people:
Select Doorknobs Or Livers That Are Easy On Hand
When we are talking about old people, we should take care of even small details which may prove most important later. Doorknobs are very common things, and we don't think about them much, but it may be difficult for elderly people to use them especially the ones with arthritis or other conditions. Use doorknobs (round) on your doors instead of using a door handle or door catch.
If you want a more flexible thing that uses the least power for opening a door easily is door liver. Levers are best on doors and make it easier for the elders to open the door. You can open the door with having lever with wet hands or even the arm when you are carrying things.
Illuminate The House With Proper Lighting To Make The Space Secure And Safe For Elderly people
When anyone reaches to their elder age, they lost some or much of their sight and it makes difficult for them to see in dim light. Make sure when you renovate your house for elders that illuminate every portion of your house and use bright lights instead of dim lights. Provide ample lighting in certain areas like outdoor areas, reading areas, bathrooms, and staircases.
Install lights at the top and bottom of your stairways. Insert large light switches that are easy to press especially if you have an arthritic elder in your home. Install light lights so they can easily move around at night if they need to and build enough windows that allow maximum natural light to enter your home.
Ensure Slip-Resistant Flooring For Safe Walk
If you are designing the home for your elderly parents keep this in mind that the flooring, you are choosing for your home should be slip-resistant and do not contain any slippery materials like tiles marble etc. It may cause accidents in the future. Wood flooring is less resistant and preferable in the house in which elderly people live.
You can complement your floors with nonskid mats or rugs which improve the walking for elders. Most importantly the elders which use walkers are at high risk of falling so add low pile carpets on your floors that do not allow the walker to catch on the deep pile and prevent the fall.
